Victorian Fashion

Posted on: April 19th, 2011 by Dena

At no other time in history did fashion affect women’s lives like the Victorian era. Women went to extraordinary lengths in the pursuit of the perfect twelve inch waist. Daily items like furniture and utensils even changed to meet the designs in ladies fashion. Enjoy this visual feast as we dress from the inside out, counting the number of layers we button, cinch and tie them on!

Pioneers

Enjoy stories of how pioneers lived and the types of chores children would have to do to help the family back in the days before computers, television, radio, or even electricity.  How did they do the laundry?  What about soap?   How did they preserve food when there was no refrigeration?  Why didn’t older homes have closets?  No indoor plumbing – how did they deal with that?  Lots of questions for discussion.

Immigrant

What was it like to come to America at the turn of the twentieth century?  Enjoy interacting with an authentically dressed British character as she relates stories of her journey across the Atlantic aboard a steamer and her experiences at Ellis Island and beyond!

Suffragette

2010 marks the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in Washington State.  Despite opposition, persecution, and, in some cases, physical torture, these women embodied the meaning of perseverance as they soldiered on towards equality.  Learn about the driving force behind and hardships endured by those who gave women the right to vote.

Victorian Hats

During Victorian times hats were not only apart of a uniform, they were an art form. A milliner sold ready made hats and, for the wealthy, could fashion a one of a kind masterpiece. Enjoy a PowerPoint presentation on the history of hats during one of the most fashion conscience and influential periods ever! Also included are many hand made examples of millinery from this period.

Victorian Lampshades

Victorian silk lampshades started as a craft with a rather “shady” past but became fashionable toward the middle and end of the Victorian era.  They were custom dyed and hand stitched of silk, linen, or velvet, and the more fancy and elaborate, the better.   One of our educators has been re-creating these historic replicas for many years and will bring in a variety of lampshades in various stages of completion to show how they were made.   A good program for a crafts class.
